the god awful bus ride to chile

I don't care who you are, but 21 hours in a bus to Chile (and 21 hours in bus to return to Cusco) is a little insane.

Nevertheless, we did it.  There was a strike on Tuesday, so our first bus was canceled.  Therefore, we had to take an overnight bus to Arequipa, then on to Tacna, then on the Arica, Chile.  The only beautiful part of the whole experience was Arequipa.  We had an hour in between buses in Arequipa, so we took a cab to the main plaza and had some coffee and fruit juice.  It was 5am and so gorgeous.  We can't wait to go back.

Then we hopped on the bus to Tacna (a smaller town in Southern Peru, just north of Chile). Check out the below pictures of the stretch of land between Arequipa and Tacna: it is my version of hell.  It was a whole new Peru, which I do not care to revisit.

Arequipa's Plaza de Armas

The view from the balcony where we drank our much needed coffee.

The view from the backseat of the collectivo that took us from Tacna to Arequipa.

It all looked like this.
Or worse.

A little desert town.

This picture is actually kind of pretty in a very desolate way.

..you still could not pay me to live in this house.
Yes, that's a house.

I don't even want to be dead here.
Probably the most depressing cemetery I have ever seen.
